"Adam and eve lived in Paradise. They were naked, but they were not ashamed of it, because they did not know what shame was. Their prosperity ended on the day eve met the serpent in the garden of Eden. The serpent was the most cunning of all the creatures of the Lord: when he learned that God had forbidden Adam and eve to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, he said: "nevertheless, try them-you will not only learn what is good and what is evil, but you will become like the gods yourself." Unable to resist, eve took a bite of the forbidden fruit and shared it with Adam. And suddenly they were both ashamed of their nakedness and covered themselves with Fig leaves. When God called Adam, he answered him from behind the trees: "I hear You, but I am afraid to go out — I have no clothes on." The Lord began to ask how Adam knew about his nakedness, and eve confessed that she had listened to the treacherous serpent and had tasted the fruit of the tree of knowledge. And Adam also confessed that he had tasted the fruit. Then God made clothes for Adam and eve, banished them from Paradise, and deprived them of eternal life and Paradise. Now they knew that there was good and evil on earth-submission to the will of God and resistance to it-and they were doomed to pass on to posterity the sin of disobedience for which the Creator had so severely punished them."

"Адам и Ева жили в раю. Они были нагими, но не смущались этого, ведь они не знали, что такое стыд. Их благоденствие кончилось в тот день, когда Ева встретила в райском саду змея. Змей оказался самым хитрым из всех созданий Господа: выведав, что Бог запретил Адаму и Еве питаться плодами с дерева познания, он сказал: «А все-таки попробуйте их — вы не только узнаете, что такое добро и что такое зло, но и сами станете как боги». Не удержавшись, Ева откусила от запретного плода и поделилась им с Адамом. И вдруг они оба застыдились своей наготы и прикрылись листьями смоковницы. Когда же Бог позвал Адама, тот ответил ему из-за деревьев: «Я Тебя слышу, но боюсь выйти, — на мне нет никакой одежды». Господь стал допытываться, откуда Адам узнал о своей наготе, и Ева созналась, что послушалась коварного змея, вкусила от плода дерева познания. И Адам тоже признался, что вкусил от этого плода. Тогда Бог сделал Адаму и Еве одежду, изгнал их из рая и лишил вечной жизни и райского блаженства. Теперь они знали, что есть на земле добро и зло — покорность воле Божьей и противление ей — и были обречены передать потомкам грех непослушания, за которое Творец так сурово их покарал."
